1 / Commercial waste collection rules

Holiday lets are classed as commercial premises. This is irrespective of whether you pay council tax or business rates. Using the free council waste service to dispose of your holiday let waste is a CRIMINAL OFFENCE. That's why it's vital every holiday let owner arranges cost-effective and reliable commercial waste collection.

2 / Recycling regulations in Wales

From April 2024 all businesses in Wales must separate their recycling streams AT SOURCE. This means paper/card, glass, plastics and general waste must all be binned and bagged separately.

3 / Waste Transfer Notes

It is a legal requirement for holiday let owners to keep a record of their WASTE TRANSFER NOTES. We provide these free of charge for inspection by the council. Failure to provide one can result in large fines.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS...

Our aim is to make it as simple as possible for holiday let owners.

Our most common questions are listed below and please drop us an email or give us a call if you have any other queries. We're always happy to see how we can accommodate you!

  • Do you provide the bins?
Yes, we can provide wheelie bins if you wish. We provide standard 240L household-sized wheelie bins and the hire charge is only 9.5 pence per bin per day, plus VAT. This work out at roughly £3 per month.
  • Can I provide my own bins?
Yes, if you wish. We can collect from wherever you ask us to. We will put our stickers on your bins to help us tell which ones to collect from. However, please be aware that if they belong to the local council they can turn up at any time and remove them.
  • Can you collect from the house/driveway/bin store?
Yes! We collect from wherever you ask us to. There is no need to 'put the bins out' for collection at the kerbside. Our aim is to make it as easy as possible for holiday let owners and your guests. Our small, purpose-built vans can get anywhere a car can. So we can get up narrow country lanes in rural areas. Please note that we still have to abide by all the usual highway code laws and so would need a safe place to pull up, get out of the vehicle and empty your bins. We cannot risk the safety of our drivers.
  • What day are collections in my area?
Collection days can differ week to week as they depend on the particular route for that week. We recommend you let your guests know to place their rubbish in the outside wheelie bins as soon as the bags are full and that way we can easily collect whatever has been produce that week/fortnight whenever we come to collect. This also means there is no need to tell guests to remember a particular bin day!
  • Do I have to separate waste and recycling?
If the property is in Wales - YES. If the property is in England - this is not yet a legal requirement. If in England, it's up to you whether you ask your guests to separate general waste and recycling, although we recommend you do. Please note that we do require all waste to be bagged.
  • What about food waste?
As you will not be producing more than 5kgs per week of specific food waste, this can be put in the black bin bags of the general waste.
  • What about garden waste?
We can collect this too. But would need to arrange a special collection with an additional charge. Please contact us for more details.
  • What happens to my waste after you've collected it?
We take it away and dispose of it at a designated waste transfer depot. Here, the bags are ripped open and the rubbish placed on conveyor belts where further sorting and recycling happens. This means that any waste going to landfill is minimised and this rate currently stands at under 5%. It's not a pleasant job but someone has to do it!
  • How do I know you have collected?
At the start of each week we send you an email with an estimated collection time for that week. This contains a tracking link so you can follow the driver along his route. After the collection has happened, we take a picture of the empty bins and you get a second email confirmation confirming the exact time and location of the collection. You can retain these for your records.
  • Do I have to notify guests?
No. We simply turn up and collect the waste from the wheelie bins. We recommend letting guests and housekeepers know to put their full bin bags in the outside bins as soon as they are full so nothing piles up inside the house.
  • Can I add extra ad hoc collections in peak times?
Yes. We simply charge an additional amount per collection which must be invoiced and paid up front. Please contact us for more details. You must already have either an annual or fortnightly collection contract with us - we do not provide one-off collections.
  • Can you reach my property?
We have small vans which can reach any location a car can. This means we can get up rural roads and narrow lanes to reach your house and means we can collect from locations that council bin lorries or other private waste collectors can't. If you have any questions about this, please get in touch and we will be able to confirm if it's possible. It helps if you know the What3Words exact location of the collection point so we can pinpoint this on a map. Please note that we still have to abide by all the usual highway code laws and so would need a safe place to pull up, get out of the vehicle and empty your bins. We cannot risk the safety of our drivers.
  • How do I arrange maintenance or gardening work?
Simply give us a call and we'll let you know how soon we can attend!
  • Are you licensed?
Yes. We are licensed as an 'Upper Tier Waste Carrier' with the Environment Agency. Our license number is CBDU527306. Our drivers are also fully insured with public liability insurance.
  • What maintenance services can you provide?
We can provide any general handyman and gardening services you require for the running of your holiday let. We've fixed beds, repaired toilet seats, touched up paintwork and fixed broken windows and doors. We can manage just about anything apart from the trades requiring official certifications such as gas/electrical works or large plumbing jobs.

ABOUT US

Bubbles and Bins is a small, family-run business and we realised that property owners were faced with the same problems again and again with regards to private/commercial waste collections and reliable maintenance work. We work alongside holiday let management companies, private owners and commercial landlords to help fill that niche.

Local councils' commercial rubbish collections aren't designed with customer service in mind and often only collect every 2 or 3 weeks. Meanwhile, providing a five-star service to guests means getting handy people out to fix things quickly at properties when they go wrong. We simply bought our own waste collection vans, got a waste carrier license from the Environment Agency and took it on ourselves!

Bubbles and Bins is now the only full-service waste collection, hot tub servicing and home maintenance company operating across Wales, The Lake District and Yorkshire. Please get in touch to see how we can help you manage your holiday cottage with much less stress...
